We will trim a metre of wheat from the edge of every local field and use the flour we make from it to make bread.

No particular reason... just to keep overheads down really.

Summer is lovely.

I've worked for a month so I've earned a little money.

I bought a new bike and I've been riding a lot.

and I'm learning to programme, I'm currently learning objective C and can make very basic iPhone apps. I'm hoping that it can make me a little more self sufficient and I'm sure it will come in handy at some point.

I must say it is very interesting, and a refreshing change to sketching ideas as a final outcome.

The In-Book Awards

Well hello there, I've now finished my second year of uni. Quite a scary, yet motivating thought. Things have been good since I last posted, noteworthy of which, I got my work for Mini into the D&AD Student Awards Book. I was elated, until it dawned on me... My parents, brother, sister, grandad, grandma etc. are going to want a copy of the book. The thing is, there is no book. I know, D&AD take my £12 and in return I get nothing physical; just a mention on their website.

This is not right.

Which is why I am now formally announcing that I am starting my own awards body...

The In-Book Awards 2010.

The difference is, The In-Book Awards does have a book. In fact the book is the award, your own personal 8 page book with your work in it, IN A BOOK!

The entry requirements are that you won an In-Book in the D&AD Student Awards. Anybody who enters automatically wins.

Luckily, Leah Klein, former Creative Director of Wired Magazine, taught me how to bind books last year in a workshop, so I'm going to be a bit busy.

I'm going to make some booksleeves and then get a website registered and start promoting this. Hopefully it will get me a bit of coverage. And the best thing is, the people who get in book are likely to be the best creative students who are likely to be getting jobs soon, so I'll hopefully be getting some good contacts.

Which is why you must always be prepared.

Just a few initial ideas, but a pen on the handle end of a toothbrush with a toothpaste notepad, so if you ever get that killer idea while staring at yourself brushing your teeth.

This could be used as a campaign for a student competition, maybe YCN or student D&AD.

I'll think of some more examples soon,

A book I made

These are a few pages I designed for a project at uni. We had to design and make a book. I made mine the same size as an iPhone and put it in an iPhone case. The idea is to leave the book around on benches or tables so people think that they have found an iPhone. When they look closer, they realise that it is a book called "The Day I Found an iPhone" which is about somebody who has found an iPhone and is trying to find it's owner.

Since it's past the deadline, I thought I'd share my ideas with you for the Roses brief. The brief I chose was to redesign the £5, £10, £20 & £50 notes. You only had to use the queens face.

"The handshake has been used as a way to seal the deal for centuries. It is used to show equality, confirm the transfer of goods or just to say hello. It transcends cultures all over the world.

Nowadays, we are so used to making transactions through credit cards that we have lost the personal connection in making a deal. We no longer have to get to know who we are trading with or have any physical contact with them.

The new notes are designed so that in order to use them, you have to get back to being personal in your business deals.
The design encourages bartering, which has never been a part of the reserved english culture.

It takes influence from the culture of the Kurdish farmers in Turkey, in which traders shake hands for the whole period in which the deal is taking place."

"The new system takes its form as a ring which is worn on the right hand. In order to start a transaction, the two parties hold hands as they are about to shake. The two rings begin a Bluetooth connection. The harder the person grips the hand, the more money is set to be transferred between the traders. When the right amount is reached, the two shake hands, this transfers the monetary value between the rings and the transaction is complete."

£5 - Wood

Work: Image/Strapline

This week at uni, one of the old tutors of our course has returned to give us some hardcore advertising 101. The first project we had, we were given a strapline and an hour to come up with a visual that would "be a D&AD winner." I was given the line "The Sexiest Underwear" for Anne Summer.

Here's what I came up with...

When the hour was up our work was layed on the floor and arranged into either the good, average or shit pile. Dave liked my piece, he put it into the good one.

Idea: Cinema Accessibility iPhone App

When you get into a cinema it would automatically pair up to a Bluetooth connection which would then mean that using your iPhone you can access extra accessibility options. For the hard of hearing there could be synchronised subtitles on the iPhone screen and for the hard of seeing there could be automatically sychronised audio commentary explaining what is happening on screen. Also you could have directors commentary for film buffs. When a phone rings in the film your phone would ring too and what the person hears comes through your phone. A bit of exclusive insight.

No, it was in fact a new harddrive for my laptop. About the same size as an iPod.

It's given me an idea though, Post The Parcel, like pass the parcel but you play through the post with all your old mates when you've moved around the country.

Idea: iTunes Boy Racer Car

I had this idea when one of those boy racer cars went by with really loud music on, and I'm sure these guys have some kind of complex where they just want everyone to listen to their music too, to share their passion. Well, that's all good and well Mr. Racer, but even if we do acknowledge your musical taste and share it, we don't know where we can get a hold of this music because we don't know the title. So here is my idea...

A boy racer car that is sponsored by iTunes, it would have apple logos on it and underglow and just look like your average boy racer car. It would be an experiential form of advertising, i guess. It would drive around with super loud music on, although it would have displays around it with the track title and artist on, and a simplified link to download it on iTunes. This way if people hear the music and think, that's quite nice, then they can check out more songs by that artist and download the album. Maybe have a bluetooth message sending it out too?

That looking down on life feeling

Do you ever get that feeling where you actually think about life and being a human and what it's all about? I just got it for the first time in a long time. It's quite a nice feeling. I get it when I read philosophy books. I guess philosophy makes you take a non anthropocentric point of view of the world. It also means you can learn long clever sounding words like that one. Gettng that feeling makes you get more done too because you take a less sentimental, emotional look on life. Haha this is a rather deep post...

Placement

I'm doing a placement this week at Zag, in house branding agency at BBH, but due to a 3 page confidentiality agreement this message will be edited in part.

The first few days have been so ■■■■■■! It's been a really ■■■■ experience. It's definitely the first time I have ■■■■■■'d a ■■■■, although I plan on doing it again at uni. In fact to be ■■■■■■ I've tried a lot of new ■■■■s. Some quite ■■■■■■. Country Life

Back in the shire for the summer. I've got a job for the next two weeks as an exam invigilator, which is great work! If anybody else wants to pay me for nothing let me know.

To celebrate being miles from civilisation I went for a walk and took this picture. I've always loved the electricity pilons, how they look great in the country against the natural hills. I love the name "The National Grid" too.

Branding Live Brief: Ol'over

We worked on a live brief from a London branding agency on the last couple of weeks of uni. We basically had to create a new retail concept to get the nation cooking, endorsed by everybody's favourite cheeky chappy chef; Jamie Oliver.

We came up with a touring VW camper van that would visit town centres, student unions, schools etc. and teach people to cook on site. Naturally, we used a bad pun for the name.

Introducing, Ol'over!

Local buses would advertise the event to the community.

Billboard gardens would advertise the event in the actual location. It would be made of perspex and have herbs growing inside it. These herbs would then be used for the recipes that the people were actually making.

Game show idea: Credit Munch

We had a session last week where we were put into groups and had to come up with a game show idea and present it; we had a couple of hours which is great, the way I like to work. My group (Stevie, Nikki, Lawrence, Lucy and I) came up the "Credit Munch". The basic idea is that it's Ready Steady Cook for the current "economic climate." We got Tesco value beans, weetabix, bread, cornflour and custard and added food colouring to make it look mouldy then challenged one member of each of the other groups to make a creative meal. Unfortunately for Howie, he lost and had to eat his creation. Here are a couple of post meal photos. I really need to start taking photos during crits!

God's Interview Room, Ark Departure Lounge and Hell

It took us hours but we finally got the room finished! The performance went really well, we got good feedback from our tutors and we had a really fun time which was the best. Take a look at the pictures, my personal favourite is the blue sheet. It would be cool to see how many different meanings you can make out of a solid colour sheet just by adding labels.

Noah's Ark Interview Room Construction

With no suitable rooms we had to make our own, doing so by hanging wallpaper from the ceiling of the studio. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a waterproof booklet attached to the shampoo bottle which had a book divided into chapters that each took about 3 minutes to read. Just so you're starting your day off to an intellectual start? Or maybe puzzles to warm up your brain before work?

The BBC Gaza Appeal Situation

All the papers are covering this story, 50 MPs have condemned it, BBC actors are speaking out, there have even been protests in BBC buildings.

Thanks to the BBC not showing the advert it has had a great deal more publicity. If anything the BBC should be praised for such a great publicity stunt.

Idea: F1 Mirrors

I've had an idea, and I want to tell you about it. Do you see on the picture just above, do you see the mirrors on the car. Do you see how they reflect a warped, mirror image of the sponsors logo. If the designers had been a little more clever they could have printed the logo on the car in mirror image, warped so that when you see the overhead shot of the driver the logo would appear in the mirror perfectly square. This would be relatively easy to do and would not obscure the drivers rear view as he would not be able to see this in his mirrors as it would just line up in the over head view. This would also add more important advertising space as these shots are being shown all over the world and there is no clear logo visible from that shot. You heard it here first.
